SeaSafe gets behind the RNLI’s Useless Unless Worn campaign
date of article: 01 / 07 / 2008
The RNLI launched this awareness campaign to encourage owners and crew to always wear a lifejacket, promoting the message that lifejackets are 'useless unless worn.' This recommendation was based on the years of experience of the RNLI's voluntary lifeboat crew, who know how unpredictable the sea can be.
Jeremy Dale, Managing Director of SeaSafe, comments, "While most will applaud the RNLI's initiative and the significant sum they have spent on this highly visible campaign, unless lifejacket wearing is made mandatory there will still be a sizeable proportion of the boating fraternity that will be reluctant to adhere to the 'always on' principle.
"This reticence will be for many reasons, such as highly experienced sailors feeling self conscious about wearing lifejackets in calm, clear conditions and others that simply feel that lifejackets can feel uncomfortable or cumbersome if worn the whole time on board.
"We take the view that lifejackets are like car seat belts – they really are useless unless worn – but understanding that there is a groundswell of reticence is partly why we introduced our Voyager range, the world's only fully concealed 150N lifejacket within a coat range specifically aimed at the recreational sailor.
"It's clothing that not only looks great but it could also save your life because with Voyager clothing your lifejacket is always on.
"All Voyager marine clothing has our unique CLS – Concealed Lifejacket System – and no one need realise you are wearing a lifejacket, but should you go overboard your Voyager becomes a potentially life saving lifejacket in just a few seconds".
Voyager clothing comes in four styles – a sleeveless gilet, jacket, coat and unique one-piece suit – with each available in alternative sizes and colours.
They can be purchased direct from the SeaSafe factory in Cowes and you can buy online at www.seasafe.co.uk.
